ASHGABAT -- Leaders of ethnic Turkmen anti-Taliban militias in Afghanistan recently arrived in Ashgabat on the invitation of the Turkmen government, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's Turkmen service reported June 22, quoting one of the militia leaders, Emir Allaberen Karyad.

Members of the ethnic Turkmen minority in Afghanistan formed militias in northern provinces like Faryab and Jawzjan to combat the Taliban.

The reason for the invitation to Ashgabat was not disclosed. Turkmenistan rarely issues visas to Turkmen-Afghans.
