Afghanistan investigates 10 officials after June 30 Kabul bombing

Staff Report

KABUL -- Five Afghan Interior Ministry (MoI) generals and five other police officials are under investigation after a June 30 suicide bombing that devastated a police cadets' convoy in Kabul, officials said.

The suicide bombing by two Taliban killed 33 people, MoI spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said, according to a July 4 Khaama Press report.

The officers under investigation were involved in transferring the cadets from Maidan Wardak Province to Kabul, TOLO News reported July 4, quoting Nasrullah Stanikzai, an advisor to President Ashraf Ghani.

"Those who are found to have neglected their duties will be punished," Stanikzai said July 4.

The bombers boarded a cadet bus inside the training centre, a survivor, police cadet Hasibullah, told TOLO News.

Authorities suspended 10 senior security officials after the suicide bombing, Sediqqi said, according to Khaama Press.

It was not clear whether those 10 were the same 10 officials who are under investigation.

Separately, security forces July 4 in Kabul defused an improvised explosive device, Khaama Press reported.

In Paktika Province, the National Directorate of Security (NDS) recently stopped a would-be suicide bomber who was about to blow himself up in a bazaar, the NDS said July 4, according to the Afghanistan Times.
