Afghan forces foil attack on Salang Pass; 122 militants join peace process in Samangan

KABUL -- Afghan troops recently thwarted a terrorist attack on the Salang pass and the chairman of the Ghazni Province peace committee escaped a bombing, while 122 militants surrendered in Samangan Province.

Troops repulsed a militant attack on Salang, which connects Kabul with the north, Khaama Press reported July 19.

The terrorists fled after taking intense return fire from Afghan forces, officials said, adding that one civilian was injured.

Separately, Khaliliullah Hotak, chairman of the Ghazni Province peace committee, recently escaped an overnight bombing of his office, provincial police chief Brig. Gen. Aminullah Amarkhil confirmed July 19.

Two bombs exploded inside the office, but he remained unhurt, Hotak told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Meanwhile, 122 militants, including two commanders, recently abandoned insurgency and joined the peace process in Dara-e-Sof Payan District, Samangan Province, provincial police chief Lt. Gen. Muhammad Baqer Masood said July 18, according to Pajhwok Afghan News.

Security forces cleared various parts of Dara-e-Sof Payan during a counter-insurgency operation, Masood said.
