91 Afghan militants, 7 soldiers killed

Staff Report

KABUL -- Afghan security forces killed at least 91 militants throughout Afghanistan in a 24-hour span, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said July 31, according to the Afghanistan Times.

Security forces killed at least 91 militants, including 20 from the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) in multiple provinces, the MoD said. Seven soldiers were killed in the battles, the MoD added.

At least nine militants and one security officer had been killed in fighting in Garmsir District, Helmand Province, since July 30, officials said, according to a July 31 Afghanistan Times report. Those 10 casualties might have been part of the 98 militant and troop casualties reported separately by MoD.

Troops and militants are fighting in four districts of Helmand Province, provincial governor's spokesman Omar Zwak said July 31, adding that forces drove militants out of Khanshin District and prevented them from advancing in Nad-e-Ali District.

Security forces soon will launch a clearing operation in the remaining districts of Helmand, he said.
