72 Afghan militants, 23 security personnel killed

KABUL -- At least 72 militants and 23 security personnel, including a district police chief, were killed in recent fighting in Afghanistan.

Afghan troops killed at least 68 militants nationwide in a 24-hour span, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said in an August 1 statement, according to the Afghanistan Times. Twenty-one troops were killed.

Four days of combat in Nad-e-Ali District, Helmand Province, killed at least 24 militants, including two key Taliban commanders, and four troops, officials said August 1, according to TOLO News. Reinforcements have been deployed in Nad-e-Ali, Helmand Governor Hayatullah Hayat said August 1.

Some of those 24 militants and 4 troops killed in Helmand might have been part of the nationwide casualties reported by the MoD on August 1.

Meanwhile, an August 1 roadside bombing in Khwaja Sabz Posh District, Faryab Province, killed district police chief Lt. Col. Sakhi Dad Usmani and his driver, district administrative chief Abdullah Masoomi said August 2, according to Pajhwok Afghan News.

Usmani was on his way to inspect security posts that the Taliban had attacked when his vehicle hit a land mine, Masoomi said, adding that four militants were killed in a shoot-out afterward.

National Directorate of Security (NDS) operatives recently detained six suspected Taliban accused of plotting a co-ordinated attack on Mehtarlam, Laghman Province, Khaama Press reported August 2. The location of the arrest was not reported.
