Afghan forces kill 16 militants in Paktika, Nangarhar provinces

KABUL -- Recent fighting in Paktika and Nangarhar provinces killed at least 16 militants and three security personnel.

At least nine Taliban, including the shadow Taliban chief for Orgun District, were killed in fighting with troops in Paktika Province August 2, provincial governor's spokesperson Nabiullah Pirkhel told Pajhwok Afghan News August 3.

Meanwhile, troops cleared militants from three areas in Haska Mina District, Nangarhar Province, killing seven "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) members, Pajhwok Afghan News reported August 3, quoting provincial governor's spokesman Ataullah Khogyani.

The troops destroyed an ISIL recruiting centre, he said.

Militants also attacked check-points in Janikhel District of adjoining Paktia Province, killing three police officers, provincial police chief Brig. Gen. Qader Gul Zadran confirmed, according to the same Pajhwok Afghan News report.

Several attackers were killed, he said.
