30 Afghan Taliban killed in infighting; 16 join peace process in Herat

HERAT -- At least 30 Afghan Taliban militants were killed in recent internecine combat, while four foreign tourists were injured in a terrorist attack in Herat Province, officials said.

Clashes between rival Taliban factions in Shindand District, Herat Province, have killed 30 Taliban in two days, local officials said August 4, according to TOLO News.

At least 20 of the dead Taliban were supporters of recently appointed supreme commander Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada, official said. The other 10 backed a rival.

Meanwhile, 16 militants recently shunned the insurgency and joined the peace process in Herat Province, provincial police chief Mohammad Ayoub Ansari said August 3, according to TOLO News.

The surrendering militants had been active in Shindand, Adraskan and Ghorian districts, he said.

Meanwhile, militants August 4 in Herat Province opened fire on a vehicle carrying foreign tourists who were coming from Bamiyan Province, Khaama Press reported. At least four were injured.
