Afghanistan violence kills 64 militants, 14 soldiers

KABUL -- At least 64 militants, including a shadow Taliban deputy governor, and 14 Afghan soldiers were killed in security operations and incidents of violence across Afghanistan.

Security forces killed at least 58 militants, and detained 16, including the chief of a Taliban military commission, during operations in parts of Afghanistan in the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said August 30, Afghanistan Times reported.

Eleven Afghan soldiers lost their lives in the line of duty, the MoD added.

Separately, the Taliban's designated deputy governor for Ghor province was killed during a clash with security forces in the Mudirha area of Pasaband District, Ghor province, district chief Farid Afghanyar told Pajhwok Afghan News August 30.

At least three Afghan soldiers were killed and four others wounded in a roadside explosion on the Herat-Kandahar highway in Dilaram District of Nimroz province August 30, Najibullah Hayat, the district chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

A Taliban commander and four other militants were killed by a roadside bomb allegedly planted by their own comrades in Shindand district of Herat province, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said, Khaama Press reported August 30.
