Dostum to lead military operation in Kunduz

Staff Report

KUNDUZ -- Afghan First Vice President and Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum October 9 announced that he would lead an offensive against militants in Kunduz, media reported.

Security forces launched operations against militants on the Kunduz-Takhar highway and in the Bandar-e-Khanabad area early October 10, officials said, adding that troops have cleared most areas around traffic circles in Kunduz.

"I will be in the battlefield over the next few days to clear the province," Dostum said, adding that Interior Minister Taj Muhammad Jahid and one of the deputy National Directorate of Security (NDS) chiefs would accompany him, according to TOLO News.

Dostum previously commanded numerous military operations in some northern provinces, including Jawzjan and Faryab, Khaama Press reported.
