140 militants, 50 soldiers killed, 45 hostages freed in Afghan operations

KABUL -- At least 140 militants, 50 Afghan soldiers were killed and 45 hostages were freed from Taliban prisons, during separate counter-terrorism operations across Afghanistan.

Security forces repulsed co-ordinated militants' attempt to block the Kabul–Pul-i-Khumri road, killing at least eight militants in Dand-e-Ghori locality and Baghlan-e-Markazi District of Baghlan province October 17, Maj. Gen. Shaur Gul, operational in charge, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Separately, at least 14 militants were killed during Operation Sultan in Moqor, Gero and Qarabagh districts of Ghazni province October 15, the 203rd Thunder Military Corps said in a statement, according to TOLO News.

Forces also freed 45 people whom the Taliban took hostage, the statement added.

Security forces cleared many villages of Lashkargah, the capital of Helmand province, killing at least 88 Taliban, provincial governor Hayatullah Hayat said October 16, according to Afghanistan Times.

Fifty Afghan troops also lost their lives, some others were wounded and nearly 50 of them had gone missing during a two-week operation in the province, he added.

Meanwhile, at least 30 militants were killed in an air strike targeting the convoy of a top Taliban leader, Haji Lala, in Chinartu District of Uruzgan province, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) said, Khaama Press reported October 16.

Separately, a four-member terrorist group affiliated with Jundullah was busted with a cache of weapons, during the operation in Dasht-e-Qala District of Takhar province, the National Directorate of Security (NDS) said in an October 16 statement.
