6 Afghan policemen, 18 militants killed

KABUL -- At least 18 militants and six police officers were killed in recent fighting across Afghanistan.

The Taliban attacked a check-post in Shah Wali Kot District, Kandahar Province, Tuesday (December 6), killing five police officers, District Chief Haji Abdul Ghani told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Meanwhile in Arghistan District, Kandahar Province, troops recently killed "several" Taliban, provincial governor's spokesman Samim Khpalwak confirmed Tuesday (December 6), according to the Afghanistan Times. One police officer was killed in the fighting, he added.

That same day, officials reported that recent fighting in Sar-i-Pul and Jawzjan provinces left three militants dead, according to Pajhwok Afghan News.

In Kunduz city, a suicide bomber Tuesday (December 6) blew himself up before reaching his likely target, a bank, provincial police chief Brig. Gen. Qasim Jangal Bagh told Pajhwok Afghan News. Four civilians were wounded, he said, adding that the bomber blew himself up when forces identified him.

In Nangarhar Province, the National Directorate of Security in the past week arrested 11 suspected militants, including a suspected would-be suicide bomber, provincial police chief Brig. Gen. Dad Muhammad Harifi said Tuesday (December 6), Pajhwok Afghan News reported.

The suspect was supposed to bomb a consulate, he said.

Additionally, the Afghan air force recently pounded militant hide-outs in Paktika and Kunduz provinces, killing 14 insurgents, the Ministry of Defence said Wednesday (December 7).
