Afghan children face malnutrition and displacement, UN says

Staff Report

KABUL -- Children are suffering the brunt of hunger in Afghanistan, the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in its recent Humanitarian Needs Overview , according to the UN News Centre.

The country has 9.3 million people who need aid, the UN said in its study, noting that the number grew 13% in a year. It attributed the growth to "continued deepening and geographic spread of the conflict".

Needy Afghans include 1.8 million malnourished residents, of whom at least 1.3 million are children under age 5, the UN said.
