KABUL -- The death toll from avalanches and freezing weather across Afghanistan has risen to 191, officials said Friday (February 10), AFP reported, as rescue operations continued in the worst-affected areas.

Twenty-two provinces in Afghanistan have endured days of heavy snowfall, triggering avalanches, destroying buildings and trapping many in their snowbound homes.

"The worst-hit province is Nuristan, where at least 68 people have been killed," Mohammad Aslam Sayyas, deputy minister for disaster management, told AFP.

Authorities stepped up search and rescue efforts this week as weather improved, he said.
