Parliamentary, district elections to be held by March 2018

Staff Report

KABUL -- Long-awaited elections for the Wolesi Jirga (lower chamber of parliament) and district councils will take place by the end of the solar year (March 2018), said officials Wednesday (April 5), according to media.

The election was supposed to take place in 2015, but squabbling over electoral laws has delayed it.

The country's Independent Election Commission announced the new plan after a meeting with Afghan Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah and Second Vice President Mohammad Sarwar Danish in Kabul, TOLO News reported.

The firm dates of the election will be announced within a month, said Abdullah's office, according to Pajhwok Afghan News.
