KABUL -- US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson conferred on security with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani Monday (October 23) during a surprise visit to Afghanistan, according to the US embassy in Kabul.
Tillerson and Gen. John Nicholson, the top American commander in Afghanistan, met with Ghani and Afghan Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah outside Kabul to discuss the new US strategy in South Asia.
Tillerson reiterated that the US is committed to working with Kabul and regional partners "to achieve peace in Afghanistan and deny safe havens to terrorists who threaten that goal", tweeted the embassy.
Ghani reaffirmed his support for the US strategy, said the statement.
"Clearly we have to continue to fight against the Taliban, against others, in order for them to understand they will never win a military victory," said Tillerson, according to AFP.
