Taliban deputy shadow governor and his men join peace process in Herat

HERAT -- A group of six Taliban fighters, led by a deputy shadow governor, has joined the peace process in Herat Province, Pajhwok Afghan News reported Sunday (November 5).

Mullah Azad, the Taliban deputy shadow governor of the province, and his fighters fought troops during the past few years in Shindand District, said Jilani Farhad, a spokesman for the provincial governor.

The militants handed in their weapons, said Farhad.

About 36 insurgents in five groups have joined the peace process in Herat since the beginning of the year, reported Pajhwok Afghan News.
