Women win top 3 spots on Maidan Wardak's provincial council

MAIDAN WARDAK -- Maidan Wardak's provincial council has elected three women to its top administrative positions, Pajhwok Afghan News reported Wednesday (November 22).

The provincial 15-member council elected the three female members of the body as head, deputy head and secretary Saturday (November 18).

Halima Askari became chairperson of the council, winning nine votes from the 13 members who were present. Selai Wardak obtained eight votes in winning the deputy chairpersonship.

Hajira Mirzai ran unopposed for secretary of the council.

This year, 37% of the candidates obtaining leadership positions on provincial councils across the country were women, according to the Independent Directorate of Local Governance.
