Afghan parliament approves 11 cabinet nominees

KABUL -- Afghanistan's parliament Monday (December 4) approved 11 nominees for ministerial posts.

"Of 12 nominees that the government presented to us, 11 were approved and became ministers," said Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, speaker of the Wolesi Jirga (lower chamber of parliament), adding that parliament rejected the lone female in the group, who was nominated for minister of mines.

More than half of the cabinet's 25 ministerial posts, including the crucial defence and interior chiefs, had been unfilled for months.

Many of the posts went vacant after parliament fired the ministers for a range of offences.
