JAWZJAN -- Afghan police have detained two people accused of smuggling illegal drugs in Jawzjan Province, Pajhwok Afghan News reported Monday (February 12).

The suspects, identified as Baryalai and Mohammad Afzal, attempted to smuggle 70kg of opium from the Chahar Bolak District of Balkh Province to Faryab Province, said Col. Abdul Hafiz Khashi, the Jawzjan deputy chief of police.

The smugglers were arrested in the outskirts of Sheberghan, the provincial capital, he said.

"All the people know that most of the benefit of the drug business goes to militants because they are financing their war with that money," Khashi said.
