BAGRAM -- US Gen. Joe Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, arrived in Afghanistan Monday (March 19) to assess the US military campaign plan and meet with top Afghan officials, the Pentagon said in a statement.

Dunford and other officials are scheduled to travel throughout Afghanistan to gain an understanding on how the war effort is faring and how the Afghan military is developing, said Monday's statement.

"I want to talk to the actual advisors who are working on the ground with the Afghans every day and make some conclusions about where we are," Dunford told reporters.

"With the advisory effort now, I want to get a good feel for the campaign plan and what they expect to do over the next couple of months," Dunford said.

The chairman is travelling with senior Joint Staff officials who specialise in intelligence, strategy and logistics, according to the statement.
