JALALABAD -- Three brothers were beheaded in Nangarhar Province, officials said Monday (April 23), blaming the gruesome executions on "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) fighters.

The men aged 19, 24 and 27 were taken from their home and killed by ISIS Sunday (April 22) in Chaparhar District, Nangarhar provincial governor's spokesman Ataullah Khogyani told AFP.

Two of the brothers recently graduated from medical school and the third was still at university, Khogyani said, adding that ISIS also killed the men's father last year.

"Their bodies were found in Chaparhar District, where they lived," he said.

Provincial police spokesman Hazrat Hussain Mashriqiwal confirmed the brutal murders and said an investigation had been launched.

"They were taken out of their house by armed men, and their beheaded bodies were found by villagers near their house," he told AFP.

ISIS has been the target of an intense air and ground campaign by Afghan and coalition forces in Nangarhar.

Earlier this month, Qari Hikmatullah, a top ISIS commander in northern Afghanistan, was killed in an air strike.
