HELMAND -- A coalition rocket artillery strike last week in southern Helmand Province killed at least 50 senior Taliban leaders, said US military officials Wednesday (May 30), Khaama Press reported.
A High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) capable of firing GPS-guided rockets destroyed a command-and-control position that was a known meeting place for high-level Taliban leaders, said Lt. Col. Martin O'Donnell, a coalition spokesman.
The large number of leaders killed and their involvement in a range of attack planning means the impact of the HIMARS strike "will be felt beyond Helmand Province," he said.
US Forces-Afghanistan said in a statement last week that a HIMARS strike hit "a command-and-control node for high-level Taliban leaders" in Musa Qula District on May 24.
