NANGARHAR -- A group of eighteen Taliban militants Wednesday (June 27) laid down their arms and joined the peace process in Nangarhar Province, the provincial governor's media office said in a statement.

The group, led by Mohammad Hassan (also known as Zubair), had fought the government for five years, said the statement, citing Nangarhar Governor Hayatullah Hayat.

The militants heeded calls from the Saudi imams of the Makkah Grand Mosque and the Nabawi Mosque (in Medina) Friday (June 22) to embrace peace and extend their ceasefire, according to the statement.
