KAPISA -- A coalition air strike Monday (July 23) in Kapisa Province killed more than 12 Taliban commanders, including the provincial shadow governor, Radio Azadi (Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty) reported, citing local security officials.

The air strike hit Tagab District as Nasim Mushfiq, the Taliban shadow governor for Kapisa, was meeting with other Taliban local commanders to organise attacks on Afghan security forces, said Mohammad Hakim Azimi, provincial police chief of intelligence.

Mushfiq, Tagab District shadow governor Qari Ehsanullah and more than 10 other local commanders were killed, said Azimi. Reports differed on the exact total.

The air strike was based on an intelligence tip-off, added Azimi.

The Taliban did not immediately comment.
