Afghan security forces continue clearing operations in Ghazni

Salaam Times

KABUL -- Afghan forces were continuing to clear Ghazni city Tuesday (August 14) of any remaining Taliban militants, according to the NATO-led Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan.

Taliban fighters launched an assault on the city on August 10. Coalition air strikes pushed them back, killing about 150 fighters.

"Ghazni city remains under Afghan government control. Afghan National Defense and Security Forces continue to conduct clearing operations," the mission tweeted Tuesday afternoon.

Lt. Colonel Martin O'Donnell, a spokesman for the mission, said in a separate statement on Tuesday that no "reported enemy activity has occurred thus far today", TOLOnews reported.

"The Taliban, who falsely and repeatedly claim that they do not target civilians, have executed innocents, destroyed homes, burned a market and created the conditions for a potential humanitarian crisis," he added.

Unverified reports have put civilian casualties at more than 100, AFP reported, citing the United Nations.
