JALALABAD -- The death toll from a suicide bombing that decimated protesters in Nangarhar Province has soared to 68, Afghan officials said Wednesday (September 12).

Another 165 were injured, according to provincial governor's spokesman Ataullah Khogyani.

The blast occurred Tuesday (September 11) in Nangarhar after a suicide bomber blew himself up among scores of civilians who were protesting the appointment of a local police chief.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack via its media outlet Amaq Wednesday.

A double bombing hours earlier in Jalalabad killed one boy outside a girls' school.
