Ghani orders action against illegal militias in Kunduz and Baghlan

KABUL -- President Ashraf Ghani ordered Afghan security forces to act against illegal militias in Kunduz and Baghlan provinces, Ghani's office said in a statement Tuesday (September 25).

The order came after a number of tribal elders and influential figures from the two provinces urged the government to shut down armed groups acting without government authorisation, said the statement.

The elders and other leaders made their plea during a Monday (September 24) meeting with Ghani in Kabul, said the statement.

In July, Afghan forces arrested three illegal militia commanders in Faryab, Uruzgan and Farah provinces, according to the Defence Ministry.
