KANDAHAR -- A suicide bomber targeting an Afghan political candidate Tuesday (October 9) killed at least eight people in Lashkargah, Helmand Province, AFP reported Tuesday, citing officials.

Another 10 Afghans were wounded when the attacker blew himself up inside the campaign office of Saleh Mohammad Asikzai in Lashkargah, Helmand provincial governor's spokesman Omar Zwak told AFP.

Asikzai was among the dead. A first-time candidate, he was campaigning on a platform of "positive change".

No group has claimed responsibility yet, but the explosion came a day after the Taliban released a statement and vowed to disrupt the election process.

Some 54,000 members of Afghan forces are assigned to protect more than 5,000 polling centres on election day (October 20).
