KABUL -- The National Directorate of Security (NDS) says its personnel arrested two individuals who planned to assassinate a religious scholar in Kabul, Khaama Press reported Monday (December 3), citing an NDS statement.
One of the detainees, identified as Noor ul Rahman, was an imam at Hazrat-e-Bilal mosque in Kabul police district no. 5 (PD-5), said the statement.
The two suspects, whom the Haqqani Network ordered to commit the killing, have confessed to the plot, according to the NDS.
On November 24, a gunman assassinated Mawlawi Abdul Basir Haqqani, chairman of the Kabul Ulema Council, in PD-7 in Kabul. Police arrested a suspect shortly after the incident.
