KABUL -- Afghan commandos in Paktika Province killed the leader of the Taliban's Red Unit responsible for five provinces, Khaama Press reported Wednesday (December 19).

The militant, identified as Bilal Zadran, was killed late Tuesday night (December 18), according to Ghafoor Ahmad Jawid, Defence Ministry spokesman.

Zadran was in charge of Taliban Red Unit activities in Khost, Paktia, Ghazni, Logar and Paktika provinces, Jawid said.

Zadran's death came after the National Security Council November 15 ordered the country's security forces to step up offensive operations against the militants.

The Taliban did not immediately comment.
