25 Taliban militants, 2 Iranians killed in Faryab

MAZAR-E-SHARIF -- Afghan forces killed at least 27 militants, including 25 Taliban members and two Iranians fighting alongside them, in Faryab Province, the 209th Shaheen Corps of the Afghan National Army said in a statement Tuesday (January 1).

The battles erupted in the past 24 hours between Taliban insurgents and Afghan forces along the highway between Shirin Tagab and Khwaja Sabz Posh districts, the statement said.

Officials identified the Iranian nationals by their aliases, Mullah Ahmad and Mullah Jundallah.

Taliban militants killed in the fighting included two local commanders identified as Mullah Nasrat and Mullah Saadi, the statement added.
