Ghani's peace envoy to visit Pakistan for talks

KABUL -- President Ashraf Ghani's new special envoy for regional affairs and peace, Mohammad Umer Daudzai, plans to visit Pakistan next week with a High Peace Council (HPC) delegation to discuss a regional consensus for attaining peace, TOLOnews reported Wednesday (January 2).

"We really want to reach peace," Daudzai said Wednesday in Kabul. "For this, we should have a regional consensus, and our first trip will be to Pakistan next week. Then we will decide whether to visit Iran."

It is not clear what the Taliban actually want, said Daudzai, who heads the HPC Secretariat.

The HPC members' visit to Pakistan will come shortly after Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi flew to Kabul twice in December to discuss peace in Afghanistan.
