Afghan troops kill 71 militants in past 24 hours: Defence Ministry

KABUL -- Afghan forces killed at least 71 militants and wounded 49 others during a series of operations conducted in the past 24 hours nationwide, the Defence Ministry said in a statement Friday (January 4).

The operations, which had air support, took place in Nangarhar, Kapisa, Paktia, Paktika, Ghazni, Kandahar, Daikundi, Farah, Badghis, Faryab and Helmand provinces, said the statement.

In one operation in Kandahar Province, the troops killed at least 25 militants, including a local Taliban commander identified as Gulab Agha, according to the statement. The same operation wounded at least 13 militants.

In another instance, Afghan forces killed seven militants and wounded three in Nejrab District, Kapisa Province.
