HERAT -- Gunmen stormed a police station in Herat Province Saturday (January 12), killing at least five Afghans and wounding two others, officials said.

Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, a Taliban spokesman, claimed responsibility in a tweet Sunday (January 13).

Two police officers and three civilians, including a child, died in the attack that ended less than two hours after it began, the provincial governor's spokesman Jilani Farhad told AFP.

Another two officers were wounded. Both attackers were killed.

The bloodshed comes as US peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad visits the region for meetings aimed at bringing an end to the war in Afghanistan.
