Afghan ambassador set to return to Islamabad after diplomatic row

KABUL -- Afghan Ambassador to Islamabad Atif Mashal is set to head back to his post after he was recalled over a diplomatic row with Pakistan, the Foreign Ministry said Thursday (March 28).

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan suggested earlier this week that forming an interim Afghan government would smooth peace talks with the Taliban, prompting Kabul to recall Mashal from Islamabad in protest.

The Foreign Ministry decided to send Mashal back after Pakistan's Foreign Ministry clarified Khan's comments, Sebghatullah Ahmadi, Afghan Foreign Ministry spokesman, tweeted Thursday.

Khan was referring to "Pakistan's model, where elections are held under an interim government. The comments should not be misinterpreted to imply interference in Afghanistan's internal affairs", the Pakistani ministry said Wednesday (March 27).
