US ambassador criticises Taliban's destruction of telecom infrastructure

KABUL -- US Ambassador to Afghanistan John Bass Wednesday (August 28) criticised the Taliban for vowing to attack more telecom sites while seeking a peace settlement at the same time.

"Taliban say they want peace and that we are close to a deal that promotes a settlement, but at the same time they are destroying telecom and other infrastructure #Afghans depend on," Bass said on Twitter.

"Should we and Afghans pay attention to what they say, or what they do? It is long past the time for violence and attacks to end," he added.

The Taliban in a statement Monday (August 26) vowed to target the sites, employees and subscribers of the Salaam Telecommunication Co.

Network antennas enable the government to track insurgent movements, say the Taliban.
