Afghan forces kill 181 Taliban in Helmand

LASHKARGAH -- As many as 181 Taliban and a policeman were killed during the on-going security offensives in different districts of Helmand province, officials said.

Security forces killed at least 130 Taliban during a three-day on-going operation in Nad-e-Ali District and provincial capital Lashkargah of Helmand province, Maiwand Military Corps Commander for Helmand and Brig. Gen. Wali Muhammad Ahmadzai told journalists October 17, Pajhwok Afghan News reported. One policeman was killed, Ahmadzai added.

The Helmand provincial office, in a separate statement, claimed that at least 51 militants were killed and 12 Taliban vehicles, six motorcycles and weapons ‎were destroyed, during ground and air operations in the Bashran area of Lashkargah city and parts of Garmsir District October 17, TOLO News reported.

Meanwhile, security forces repulsed a Taliban attack on Maimana city, the capital of Faryab province, the night of October 16, TOLO News reported.

Taliban militants attacked the city from three directions targeting the army base and airport in Maimana, but security forces pushed them back, officials said. No casualties were reported during the clashes.
