KABUL -- Gunmen have abducted a Spanish employee of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in northern Afghanistan, officials said Tuesday (December 20), marking the latest in a series of kidnappings of foreigners in the country.
The abduction occurred Monday (December 19) when workers of the international charity were travelling in two vehicles from Mazar-i-Sharif to Kunduz.
"One male colleague was taken. The rest were let go," the ICRC said in a statement.
A diplomatic source in Madrid confirmed that abducted employee was a Spanish national.
No militant group has so far claimed responsibility for the abduction.
Local authorities are investigating the incident, Kunduz government spokesman Sayed Mahmood Danish told AFP.
