Iranians, Taliban met in Helmand, governor says

Staff Report

HELMAND -- Iranian representatives recently met with Taliban insurgents in Garmsir District, according to Helmand Governor Hayatullah Hayat.

"Iranian interference [in Afghan affairs] has increased," he told Radio Free Afghanistan Sunday (January 22).

The Afghan intelligence agency confirmed the meeting, Hayat said, adding that he has ordered a further investigation into foreign interference in Helmand.

Security forces found rockets with Iranian markings after a Taliban attack on the provincial government compound in Lashkargah, he said, according to Khaama Press.

The Taliban fired several rockets on the compound in a co-ordinated attack and some of the rockets did not explode after hitting the buildings, he said.
