Taliban reiterates call for direct talks with US

KABUL -- Taliban supreme leader Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada issued a message for Eid Tuesday (June 12), reiterating calls for direct negotiations with the United States to end the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan.

Washington has previously rejected such calls, insisting on an Afghan-led peace process.

"If the American officials truly believe in a peaceful end to the Afghan imbroglio, then they must directly present themselves to the negotiation table," Haibatullah said in a letter sent to media via email.

He also rejected a recent fatwa from Afghanistan's top clerics that proclaimed suicide attacks a sin.
