Afghanistan signs customs pact

KABUL -- Afghan Finance Minister Eklil Hakimi Sunday (July 16) in Kabul signed a commitment to the Arusha Convention of the World Customs Organisation (WCO), a statement from the ministry said.

The Arusha Convention is meant to foster good governance and customs modernisation.

"Accession of Afghanistan to the Arusha Convention will help us to strengthen infrastructure and human resources capacity in the customs department to develop the economy in addition to collecting national revenue," Hakimi said, according to the Kabul Times.

The WCO hopes to share its experience in capacity building with Afghanistan, WCO Secretary-General Kunio Mikuriya said at the signing ceremony.
