JAWZJAN -- Infighting between two Taliban factions has left at least 50 militants dead in Jawzjan Province, Khaama Press reported Wednesday (October 25).

Fighting broke out Tuesday (October 24) over a dispute on the collection and distribution of zakat, an Islamic tax often collected by the Taliban.

"A group of Taliban militants was collecting [zakat] from the farmers in the Chaqmachaqur area of Qush Tepa District ... when another group prevented them and began firing," Nasratullah Jamshidi, the Afghan National Army (ANA) spokesman for the north, told Xinhua.

The Taliban had no comment.
