Afghan commandos seize Taliban drugs in Helmand raid

HELMAND -- Afghan special forces seized Taliban drugs worth about $12.6 million (870 million AFN) in Helmand Province earlier this month, the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission said in a statement Sunday (April 22).

Commandos from the 7th Special Operations Kandak, backed by the Afghan air force's 777th Special Mission Wing, carried out a nighttime raid against a Taliban narcotics production facility in Helmand April 11-12, according to the statement.

Troops captured five Taliban fighters during the operation, said the statement.

"Operations like this, which would not have occurred a year ago, showcase the growing capabilities of the Afghan Commandos," said NATO Resolute Support Mission Commander Gen. John Nicholson.

"This success demonstrates the mounting military pressure on the Taliban. They cannot win," he said.
