Afghanistan and Pakistan to participate in ICC Cricket World Cup 2019

LAHORE -- Afghanistan and Pakistan are set to be among the countries taking part in the men's 2019 International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket World Cup, scheduled to begin Thursday (May 30) in England and Wales.

This year's event is the 12th edition of the cup and will run until July 14.

The 46-day tournament will see a single group of 10 teams playing each other team once. It will have 45 league matches as the top four teams qualify for the semi-finals.

This is Afghanistan's second consecutive appearance in a Cricket World Cup. Afghanistan will play the defending champion, Australia, in its opener on Saturday (June 1) in Bristol.

Pakistan will face the West Indies in its first World Cup encounter in Nottingham Friday (May 31).

Afghanistan alarmed all its opponents by defeating former world champion and reigning ICC Champions Trophy winner Pakistan in a warm-up match May 24 in Bristol.

Young men in Afghanistan and Pakistan often have great interest in popular sports like cricket, which helps in efforts to turn them away from possible recruitment by militant groups.
