Workers to rebuild Bamiyan Buddha

Staff Report

KABUL -- Reconstruction work on one of two monumental Buddha statues in Bamiyan Province that the Taliban destroyed is likely to start soon, media reported.

Specialists meeting in Munich, Germany, recently decided to rebuild the second largest statue, the 35m-tall Shahmama Buddha, Bamiyan Governor Mohammad Tahir Zahir said Sunday (December 11), according to Khaama Press.

The Taliban shelled and machine-gunned the Buddhas in March 2001.

Reconstruction plans for the larger Buddha statue were not reported.
