Afghan troops kill 58 militants, 45 Taliban commanders

KABUL -- At least 58 militants were killed in a 24-hour span across Afghanistan, while at least 45 Taliban commanders, including shadow governors and deputy governors have been killed in the past four months.

Afghan troops killed at least 58 militants in several provinces, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said July 18, according to the Afghanistan Times. Four troops were killed.

Separate coverage might have reported some of those deaths a second time. Combat between the Taliban and security forces July 18 in Qala-i-Zal District, Kunduz Province, killed at least eight militants and a soldier, TOLO News reported, quoting the Afghan National Army (ANA).

Troops carrying out an overnight raid in Nehar-e-Seraj District, Helmand Province, July 18 killed six militants, provincial governor's spokesman Omar Zwak said, according to TOLO News.

Counter-terrorism operations in the past four months in Afghanistan have killed at least 45 Taliban commanders, including shadow governors for Kandahar, Ghazni and Helmand provinces and shadow deputy governors for Farah and Kabul provinces, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) said, according to a July 18 TOLO News report.
