Afghan forces kill at least 139 militants

KABUL -- At least 139 militants and five Afghan troops were killed recently in fighting nationwide.

Troops killed at least 89 militants in multiple provinces in a 24-hour span, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said August 23, according to the Afghanistan Times.

Five Afghan National Army (ANA) troops were killed, the MoD said.

The Taliban shadow governor for Ghor Province was among 50 insurgents killed in an August 22 air strike in Pashtun Kot District, Faryab Province, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) said August 23, according to Khaama Press and the Afghanistan Times.

Meanwhile, 12 Taliban and 12 "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) militants were killed recently in Nangarhar Province, provincial governor's spokesman Ataullah Khogyani told Pajhwok Afghan News August 23. The 24 dead militants might have been part of the body count of 89 reported by the Afghanistan Times.
