161 Afghan militants, 10 soldiers killed

Staff Report

KABUL -- At least 108 loyalists of the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) were among 161 militants killed in a 48-hour span nationwide, officials said.

At least 96 ISIL members were killed in fighting in Achin District, Nangarhar Province, in a 24-hour span, the Ministry of Interior said in an October 5 statement.

Security forces killed at least 65 militants nationwide in a 24-hour span, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said October 4, Afghanistan Times reported.

The 65 dead insurgents include 12 ISIL members, the MoD said, adding that 10 soldiers were killed.

Other sources reported the recent deaths of four militants in Kama District, Nangarhar Province, and of 27 Taliban in Baghlan Province. They might have been part of the 65 insurgents reported killed by the MoD.

One suicide bomber recently blew himself up in Baghlan Province when he fell off his bicycle, provincial governor Abdul Sattar Baraz said, according to Pajhwok Afghan News. He also might have been one of the 65 slain militants.
