Iran is hosting Afghan Taliban leaders at a Tehran conference on Islamic unity, TOLO News reported Thursday (December 15).
Iranian cleric Mohsen Araki, who is a member of Iran's Assembly of Experts, said "Iran has always held contacts with some parties in the Taliban movement", according to the report.
This announcement comes two days after the statement of the Iranian ambassador to Kabul, Mohammad Reza Bahrami, who spoke about talks between his country and the Taliban.
Afghan authorities had repeatedly accused Tehran of providing military and logistical support to Taliban, claims Iran has previously denied.
The move is "unprecedented" for a country that always denied direct contact with the Taliban, TOLO News added.
