Afghan forces launch operation 'Shaheen-25' against ISIL in Nangarhar

JALALABAD -- Afghan security forces backed by US air support on Sunday (February 12) launched operation "Shaheen-25" against "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) militants in Nangarhar province, security officials said.

The operation started in Kot and Haska Mina districts and would be gradually extended to other areas, Afghan army spokesman Maj. Sherin Aqa Faqiri said, Pajhwok News reported.

He said police and army personnel will be involved in the operation and they would be provided air support by US forces if needed.

According to police spokesman Hazrat Hussain Mashriqiwal, the police will also establish checkpoints in areas recaptured from ISIL.
